Both Ménière’s disease and Panic Disorder have a common reference frame in terms of sudden and unexpected recurrence of the attack. Moreover, the two clinical pictures share some symptoms: dizzines, vertigo, nausea, vomiting, anxiety, loss of motor control. Aim of the study is to assess the different and common characteristics of three groups of patients with different diagnoses: Ménière’s disease versus non-Ménière type vertigo versus Panic Disorder.
Method
All the patients have been studied with rating scales and diagnostic interviews.
Results
We found that Ménière’s disease symptomatic sequelae are similar to those of Panic Disorder: the two clinical pictures present in comorbidity a statistic high prevalence of Agoraphobia as their natural evolution; Panic Disorder is comorbid with Ménière Disease but not with non-Ménière’s type vertigo.
Past psychiatric disorders are not associated with the presence of Agoraphobia or Panic Disorder but only with high levels of anxiety and depressive mood.
