Objective
Cloninger’s dimensional model has been investigated in three clinical samples,
with recurrent depressive, bipolar and schizophrenic disorders, in order to
evaluate the construct validity of the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire
(TPQ).
Methods
Factor structure of the TPQ subscales has been examined in a sample of 230
subjects, 111 meeting DSM-III-R criteria for bipolar disorder, most recent
episode manic, 79 recurrent depressive and 40 schizophrenic disorder.
Results
Factor analyses showed different construct validity in the three clinical
samples. Harm Avoidance (HA) only, of the three original factors, maintained
stability in the three populations, while the two other factors showed a less
homogeneous pattern. Significant differences for HA and three of its four
subscales have been observed between depressive and schizophrenic subjects.
Conclusions
The HA dimension stability, with similar validity in the three clinical groups,
suggest the possible utility of TPQ in psychoses. It could be hypothesised
that among these disorders the HA increase is aspecific, a consequence of
the severity of the psychopathology, a non-specific response to the pathology
or a risk to develop a mental disorder.
