Introduction: a retrospective study was undertaken on 259 patients diagnosed with a major depressive disorder according to DSM-IV criteria. Age ranged between 18 and 75 years. Patients records were withdrawn from the archive of the outpatient clinic of the III Clinica Psichiatrica of the University of Rome "La Sapienza".
Methods: MMPI test was submitted to all patients at their first admission in our facility. Patient history included: educational level, marital status, familial occurrence, codiagnosis in Axis I and/or II. Patients were subdivided according to gender. Statistical analysis of data was performed. Absolute scores (T-scores), scores rating higher than 70T and single item answers were compared to identify different psycopathologic traits of depression in both genders.
Results and discussion: scores of five scales (F, Hs, D, Hy, Pt) were higher in women, achieving statistical significance. The same occurred only on scale L for men. Furthermore, scales Pa e Ma showed higher values for women when comparing scales with T-scores higher than 70. Women answered affirmatively more often to items representing somatic symptoms, lack of interest, fatigue, demoralization whilst men to those which alert toward difficulty on balancing inner control of disease.
