Objective: obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms in schizophrenic patients have been described for more than a century; recent studies stressed high prevalence rates and worse outcome in the group of patients with OC symptoms. We evaluated the response to treatment with SSRIs in schizophrenic patients with OC symptoms.
Method: 15 schizophrenic patients with OC symptoms were evaluated. All subjects were treated with classic and atypical antipsychotic drugs showing a good stabilization of psychotic symptoms. An additional treatment with SSRIs was carried out.
Results: a significant clinical improvement of OC symptoms was observed after SSRI introduction.
Conclusion: OC symptoms may represent a new dimensional feature of schizophrenic disease. This symptomatology is resistant to NL, but it seems to be responsive to SSRIs.
