Method
The Barratt Impulsiveness Scale 11 (BIS-11) has been administered to 50
patients with diagnosis of mood disorder depressive-type, both at admission
to the hospital and at discharge. BIS-11 has been also administered to 75
controls. The examination of psychopathological symptoms at the admission
was made by the Symptom Checklist 90 Revised (SCL-90-R).
Results
A significant difference for BIS-11 total and factor scores between patients
and controls has been found. BIS-11 total scores differed between admission
and discharge. The cognitive factor and the no planning factor, but not the
motor factor, showed significant reduction. Significant correlations between
cognitive factor and SCL-90-R scores have been found at admission only. In
both evaluations the anger/hostility score correlated with the motor factor.
Conclusions
Further studies are needed to explain if the reduction of impulsiveness
is due to a clinical global improvement or a specific improvement of the construct,
and the role of impulsiveness as ‘state’ or ‘trait’ marker.
