Farmaci antipsicotici e rischio di diabete: un approccio evidence-based
Antipsychotic drugs and risk of diabetes: an evidence-based approach

A small number of case-control studies have been carried out to analyse the risk of type 2 diabetes in schizophrenic patients treated with antipsychotic drugs. The main findings of the present review of the literature show that the incidence of diabetes is higher in schizophrenic patients treated with both novel and traditional drugs than in general population. Many methodological flaws in the experimental design and data collection of these studies do not allow to establish if, among these class of drugs, there are compounds which should be regarded at higher risk for diabetes. Further epidemiological studies, using a more appropriate methodology, are needed to assess the risk of diabetes in schizophrenic patients treated with different antipsychotics.
