Schizofrenia e diabete mellito. Il ruolo dei nuovi antipsicotici
Schizophrenia and diabetes mellitus. The role of novel antipsychotic drugs

Objectives

To estimate the prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) and hyperglycaemia in a sample of schizophrenic inpatients and compare fasting plasma glucose (FPG) between: 1) treated and untreated patients, 2) patients receiving typical and those receiving atypical antipsychotics.

Methods

FPG was measured in 43 inpatients with a DSM-IV diagnosis of schizophrenia assessed through the SCID I. For each patient, previous drug treatments as well as the personal and family history of DM and other organic diseases were recorded.

Results

In the subgroup of patients > 40 years old, the prevalence of DM was 11.7%, with another 23.5% experiencing at least one episode of FPG > 110 mg/dl. No significant differences in FPG were found between: 1) treated and untreated patients, 2) patients on typical and those on atypical antipsychotics.

Conclusions

Our findings, like those reported in previous studies, suggest that schizophrenia is associated with an increased risk of DM independently of drug treatment.
