La disfunzione erettile: aspetti

Erectile Dysfunction: diagnostic aspects,
clinical and therapeutic experiences
Current diagnostic criteria (DSM-IV, 1994) define "erectile dysfunction"
as "a persistent or recurrent impossibility to obtain or to preserve an
adequate erection until the end of sexual intercourse". This disorder may
further be classified as primary or secondary, and generalized or situational,
depending on psychological factors or on the influence of a combination between
psychological factors and a medical condition. Despite the importance ascribed
in the past to the role played by the organic and the biomedical factors in
the etiology of erectile dysfunction, it is very interesting to study the influence
exerted by the psychological, cognitive and interpersonal factors. Therefore,
the management of erectile problems seems to produce a better outcome when carried
on by multidisciplinary work units by means of a longitudinal approach. On account
of that, we intend to consider a group of patients with impotence of the "functional"
type, that is, of subjects in which the presence of an organic etiology of the
disorder has been previously excluded.
