Objective
The authors developed a questionnaire to survey both the psychopathological risk in using the Internet and the specific "psychological usage of this technology. "Addiction", "dissociation" and "psychological space" are the theoretic dimensions taken into account for generating the items.
Methods
The questionnaire (U.A.D.I.), consisting of 80 items on a five points Likert scale, was administered off-line to regular Internet users (N = 241, M = 163, F = 78).
Results
Principal Components Analysis (Equamax rotation) showed five factors (15 items each) named respectevely "Diversion-compensation", "Dissociation", "Impact on real life", "Experiencing", "Addiction". Raw scores were analysed (with ANOVA and linear correlations) considering age, sex and connection time as independent variables.
Conclusions
Data analysis indicates that "hours per week" that users spend on-line is not a discriminant variable, as it has no relation to any subscales. The analysis related to "months of usage" variable shows that experienced Internet users have basically lower scores, especially on the "Experiencing", "Diversion-compensation" and "Dissociation" subscales, compared to novice users. On the same subscales, youngers (less than 20 years old subjects) have significantly higher scores than olders
