Objective
In this article an Electronic Medical Record for the diagnosis and treatment of Eating Disorders is presented; this has been worked out and utilized at Naples University "Federico II" Department of Psychiatric Medicine.
The aim of this presentation is a contribution to research suitable tools to collect and settline medical informations in different settings (out-patient and inpatient services of psychiatric departments).
Material and Method
The Electronic Medical Record includes 12 sections covering the significant aspects of Eating Disorders; for each section, there are specific items mainly arising from medical experience, using the question and answer format.
The interview is interactive and its duration is about 30 minutes.
All the items are recorded and processed in a Data-base (File Maker Pro).
Discussion
Research in the Eating Disorders field is extensive at different clinical levels, but researchers choose methods suitable to their own research and clinical specific goals.
It is advisable to achieve data comparison both at epidemiological and clinical level.
The use of a specific Electronic Medical Record seems useful to reach theese goals.
Even with the possible methodological limitations, this tool represents an attempt to reach better diagnostic criteria for clinical and research purposes and provides support for a better comparison and interpretation among clinicians involved in the field of Eating Disorders.
