Background
The authors describe the IRP phenomenon (Internet-Related Psychopathology) through an experimental study that investigates personality traits in the potential net-addicted.
Aim and Method
Three psychodiagnostic tests were administered to a sample of 80 subjects: MMPI-2 (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory), BFQ (Big Five Questionnaire) and IAT (Internet Addiction Test). In the examined population, we identified addicted and non-addicted subjects.
Results
From the analysis of data, there result:
1) significant personality differences for addicted and non addicted subjects in MMPI-2 and BFQ scales;
2) positive correlation between time spent on-line and level of addiction to IAT.
Conclusions
In this experimental study, based on the scientific method, the authors sought objective informations on Internet-related psychopathological phenomena. The method used allows for data reproducibility and reliability.
