The anatomic-physiological, phylogenetic and ontogenetic aspects of brain commissures are reviewed in this paper, with particular emphasis on the corpus callosum. Its potential role in schizophrenic syndromes is underlined by reports on the association between callosal complete and partial dysgenesis ans psychosis. The results of several neuropsychological studies that show abnormal interhemispheric transfer patterns in schizophrenic patients are discussed in the light of the interhemispheric disconnection theory, explained as both anatomic hyperconnection and functional desynchronisation. Finally, the possible implications of callosal dysgenesis and neurodevelopment, neurological and psychopathological correlations of schizophrenic syndromes are discussed.
