The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) was developed more than 50 years ago as a non-projective test for the assessment of personality; due to sociocultural and linguistic developments during recent years, a revision was rendered necessary. The new version, MMPI-2, published in 1996, consists of 567 items, with some items added to the 506 of the old version and some of them deleted; more modern psychopathological areas covered by the current version comprise drug addiction, eating disorders, type A coronary-prone behaviour, and family problems. Normal T-scores are no more between 30 and 70, but are restricted between 35 and 65. Due to its non-projective nature, the MMPI is apt to be interpreted automatically, using an appropriate computer programme; this programme is described in the present paper. The automated programme can be run from a PC (using Microsoft Access for Windows 95, supported by a CD-ROM) and incorporates Welshs code-types and Diamonds bipolar axes method. The programme has been tested on 350 "normal" Italian subjects (122 males, 228 females) from city aeas and high educational level. The programme yields an automatic interpretation of the MMPI-2 profile.
