the Experience with the first SSRI (Fluoxetine)
As a first step, depression is seen by primary care practitioners. Early diagnosis and accurate treatment allow to anticipate the remission of the episode and to prevent recurrence of future episodes. Now, some new classes of antidepressant are available: they are effective and have minimal adverse effects or contra-indications. Fluoxetine, the first drug of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, and all new antidepressants may be usefully used since the initial clinical observation. Thus, treatment of depression is easy also in primary care setting.
