Comorbidity in Eating Disorders

Objectives: the aim of this study was to describe the clinical characteristics of 161 patients with a diagnosis of eating disorder and to assess life-time and intra-episode comorbidity.

Methods: one-hundred and sixty-one patients (51.5% with bulimia nervosa, 29.1% with binging/purging anorexia nervosa, 13.6% with anorexia nervosa, restrictive type, and 5.5% with eating disorder not otherwise specified) were assessed by means of the DSM-III-R Clinical Structured Interview-Patient Edition (SCID-P), the Eating Disorder Questionnaire (EDQ), the Bulimic Investigatory Test-Edinburgh (BITE), the Eating Attitude Test (EAT), and the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI).

Results: high rates of comorbidity were found between eating disorders on one hand, and mood disorders (18% bipolar, 42.2% major depression, and 1.8% dysthymic disorder), anxiety disorders (21.7% panic disorder, social and simple phobia 6.2% each, and generalised anxiety disorder 0.6%), and substance abuse disorders (38.6%; 11.7% alcohol abuse/dependence and 9.2% cannabinoid abuse) on the other hand, among DSM-IV axis-I disorders.

Conclusions: our preliminary data are in line with other published papers on the subject and confirm the high comorbidity rate between eating disorders, and each one of mood, anxiety and substance abuse disorders.
