Objective
The aim of this study is to verify the construct validity of the Italian version
of the "Social Adaptive Functioning Evaluation" (SAFE) in a sample
of residential chronic schizophrenic patients
Method
The SAFE has been administered in a sample of patients with schizophrenia
(mean age 60 years) admitted in two different residential structures: a) protected
residential structure (mean age 65 years) b. semi-protected residential structure
(mean age 52 years). The results of the SAFE have been analyzed through factor
analysis and VARIMAX rotation.
Results
Factor structure of the Italian version of the SAFE is similar to that
of the original version. Exploratory factor analysis identified a three factor
solution: a) social functions b) impulsiveness control c) instrumental and
self care. The Italian version of the SAFE demonstrated the ability to discriminate
between patients living in structures with different degrees of assistance
(protection) and showed a high internal consistency.
Conclusions
La SAFE, originally elaborated for schizophrenic geriatric psychiatric
patients, represents an instrument endowed with a good discriminant and construct
validity. Moreover it is an instrument easy to administer. Our data confirm
that the Italian version of the SAFE maintains the psychometric properties
of the original instrument.
