Objective
This study assessed the efficacy of combined therapy (pharmacotherapy plus brief dynamic psychotherapy) in minor depressive disorder, especially comparing combined therapy provided by one or two therapist (split treatment).
Method
12 month randomized single-blind clinical trial of combined therapy with unique therapist (N = 8) and split treatment (N = 10) in ambulatory patients with Dysthymic Disorder or Depressive Disorder Not Otherwise Specified or Adjustment Disorder With Depressed Mood and a 17-item HDRS baseline score between 8-15. Efficacy is assessed using the 17-item HDRS, the CGI of Severity and of Improvement at baseline (T0), after 6 months of combined therapy (T1) and after 6 months follow-up period (T2).
Result and conclusion
The results suggest that: a) the two types of combined therapy’s efficacies was not different, especially in term of mean HDRS change from T0 to T1 or T0 to T2; b) statistically significant differences were not found between two types of combined therapy. In conclusion, our results advise that combined therapy in minor depressive disorders with unique therapist offers no advantage over split treatment (one therapist for pharmacotherapy and a second one for brief dynamic psychotherapy).
