The awareness of illness has been recently intended in psychiatry as a larger concept, the insight, that is a phenomenon concerning also other aspects of a mental disorder, like the need of a treatment and the social consequences. Lack of insight has been confirmed in schizophrenic spectrum disorders and in mood disorders with psychotic features; however, its alteration in other psychiatric disorders has not received adequate consideration. In particular, in literature, clinical and psychopathological research on insight in anxiety disorders does not appear to thoroughly evaluate this phenomenon, being limited to the observation of a less generic impairment of this dimension compared to psychosis.
