Objective
To assess the prevalence and the distribution of Personality Disorders
(PD) in adolescents with Eating Disorders (ED).
Method
A sample of 27 adolescents (mean age: 14.9), diagnosed for an eating disorder
according to DSM-IV criteria, was evaluated through the SCID II. Clinical
subgroups were compared through the Chi-square test.
Results
74.1% of the sample met the criteria for at least one PD diagnosis. Multiple
diagnoses were found in 44.4%, mostly in the bulimic subgroup. For all subtypes,
cluster C was the most frequent PD. In restricting and full syndromes, the
most frequently assigned Axis II diagnosis was Obsessive-Compulsive PD. In
binge-eating forms, the prevalent diagnosis was Depressive PD, often associated
with cluster B PD. 25.9% received no Axis II diagnosis, this result being
correlated with EAT-40 scores below 30 (p < 0.05).
Conclusions
Our results suggest the hypothesis of the pre-existence of DP with respect
to ED. Three clinical groups are identified: 1) subjects with cluster B and
C PD (29.6%); 2) subjects with only cluster C PD (25.9%); 3) subjects with
no PD diagnoses (25.9%); this distinction may have useful implications for
treatment and prognosis.
