Nutrition and brain: strategic nourishment, oxidative stress and neuropsychiatric
disorders
Epidemiological and clinical data suggest that an altered membrane composition,
with depletion of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) is related to many neurological
and psychiatric disorders. Data coming from in vivo and post-mortem studies
put in evidence that membrane abnormalities are involved in schizophrenia and
mood disorders. These results have important therapeutic implications, as a
dietary supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids could improve the course of
many psychiatric disorders.
