Psychosis and Pathological drug dependence: towards an integrated, multi-modal
approach
In this up-date article, recent studies on the psychotic disorders correlated
to alcohol and drug addictions and contemporary dimensional diagnostic approaches
to pathological dependence disorders were reviewed. In the last few years, the
attention of many researchers and clinicians focused on psychiatric comorbidity
in alcohol-substance abusers, in the light of the self-medication hypothesis
of addictive disorders, but also as an expression of a specific psycho-biological
vulnerability. Particular attention was payed to psychodynamics of drug dependence,
in the perspective of integrating pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy and specific
social support in the treatment of psychiatric comorbidity associated to addictive
behaviour.
