Sleep disorders in a rehabilitation programme of alcoholic subjects
Among sleep disorders, insomnia is the most common and well-known, and excessive
and prolonged alcohol use is one of its known causes. Despite alcohol helps
in sleep induction, all too often it causes early, night-time awakening. Polysomnographic
studies showed that alcoholism is associated with a decrease in both SWS and
REM sleep, with sleep fragmentation, as well as with an increased frequency
and duration of night-time reawakening episodes. Sleep induction and maintenance
disorders are significantly more frequent with excessive alcohol use, as are
excessive somnolence and disorders of the wake-sleep cycle. The frequency of
parasomnias and nightmares is also significantly increased.
