Ipercontrollo esecutivo nella sindrome ossessivo-compulsiva: indici neuropsicofisiologici
Executive hypercontrol in obsessive-compulsive disorder: neuropsychophysiological measures

Objectives

The aim of this study is to investigate the possible relationships between neurophysiological and neuropsychological measures in subjects affected by obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Methods

Quantitative electroencephalographic (QEEG) characteristics were investigated in 26 patients with DSM-IV obsessive-compulsive (OC) disorder and 23 healthy controls, matched with patients for age, sex, education and handedness. All subjects were administered tests exploring executive functions, attention, short term memory and learning of recurrent sequences.

Results

A decrease of the alfa-1 band power was observed; a significant negative correlation between this neurophysiological abnormality and time to complete neuropsychological test exploring executive functions was found.

Conclusions

These findings suggest the presence of a hyperactivity of attention/executive control mechanisms in OC subjects.
