To identify possible cognitive and clinical demographic correlates of social adjustment in a sample of schizophrenic patients.
Method
The study was conducted in a Mental Health Center of Pescara. Thirty-three patients were consecutively enrolled in the study and followed up with socioepidemiological, psychopathological, intellectual and social functioning assessment measures. Patients were treated as usual by their reference psychiatrist.
Results
Social disability is associated with intellectual impairment. A weak correlation emerged between social functioning independent living and neuroleptic daily dosage.
Conclusions
Cognitive deterioration is associated with functional outcome in schzophrenic patients living in the community. Therapeutic and rehabilitation programmes should be also targeted on cognitive remediation strategies.
